RBI’s Big UPI Safety Plan

RBI is exploring a 1-hour pause for some high-value UPI payments to help reduce digital fraud. The idea is simple: slow risky payments just enough to stop scams.

Why UPI Fraud Is a Concern

UPI is fast, convenient and available 24/7. But once money is sent, it is often difficult to reverse. Fraudsters misuse this speed by creating panic and urgency.

What Is the 1-Hour Pause?

For UPI transfers above ₹10,000, money may be debited from the sender but held temporarily before reaching the receiver. This cooling period may give users time to cancel suspicious payments.

Who May Be Affected?

The proposal mainly targets high-value person-to-person transfers. Small payments and merchant payments may continue normally, so daily shopping and routine UPI use may not be affected.

Extra Protection for Users

RBI’s broader safety ideas may include trusted contact whitelisting, extra checks for senior citizens, fraud-risk monitoring and a “kill switch” to freeze digital payments quickly.

Benefits and Concerns

The benefit: users get time to detect fraud before money reaches scammers. The concern: UPI’s biggest strength is instant payment, and delays may inconvenience genuine users or small businesses.
