The 48-Hour Test That Changed India's Missile Defence

DRDO successfully conducted three major missile defence tests in just 48 hours, marking a significant milestone for India's Ballistic Missile Defence programme.

What Happened?

The trials were conducted at Chandipur, Odisha, where DRDO successfully tested AD-1 and AD-2 interceptor missiles designed to destroy incoming ballistic missiles.

A Two-Layer Defence Shield

India now has: – AD-2 intercepts missiles outside Earth's atmosphere. – AD-1 destroys any missile that enters the atmosphere. This creates a powerful two-layer interception system.

Why Is This Important?

The successful Phase-II tests demonstrate progress toward defending against longer-range ballistic missile threats, including advanced missile categories.

How Do These Interceptors Work?

Instead of carrying explosives, the interceptors use Hit-to-Kill technology.  They destroy enemy missiles through direct high-speed impact using precision guidance.

Tracking Threats Hundreds of Kilometres Away

DRDO's advanced Long Range Tracking Radar continuously detects, tracks and guides interceptor missiles toward incoming threats.

Beyond an Iron Dome

Unlike Israel's Iron Dome, which primarily protects against short-range rockets, India's BMD is designed to intercept higher-speed ballistic missile threats at multiple altitudes.

Built After Years of Indigenous Research

Following decades of defence research, India has steadily advanced technologies including Agni missiles, BrahMos, Tejas and now a more capable ballistic missile defence system.

What Comes Next?

DRDO is now working on: - Advanced anti-missile systems - Hypersonic threat interception - Improved capability against multiple independently targeted warheads (MIRVs)
